There was a time when almost anyone could replace a windshield. That was when windshields were held in the car by a rubber gasket. To remove it one sat back in the seat, lifted their feet up against the glass, and "kicked it out". Those days are long gone. Glass is now bonded with urethane adhesive to the body of the vehicle. It takes special tools, usually power tools, to cut through the seal and extract a windshield today. The urethane is too thick to dispense with a manual caulk gun so an electric one with a gear reduction motor is used. Lastly, it takes trained technicians to operate the tools and properly install a windshield to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Standards.
